London Economics worked with the UK Met Office to identify and quantify the impact and benefit of the National Meteorological Service of Belize to the economy and society of Belize. The study was commissioned at the request of National Meteorological Service of Belize. London Economics was approached to support the UK Met Office in the study due to the experience and knowledge gained in undertaking the recent socioeconomic evaluation of the UK Met Office’s activities over the next ten years (available here).

The Belize study provides an indicative range of economic benefits to the Belizean economy and society, estimated at between benefit range of $3.3 to $6.8 for every $1 Belizean Dollar spent on the National Meteorological Service of Belize. It also follows an increasing recognition by the WMO community, that this approach could provide essential evidence to governments to help secure realistic and sustainable funding to run an effective national meteorological service and help tackle the challenges of severe weather and the climate crisis.
