London Economics participated in a two-day conference (on 28th and 29th May 2025) organised by the Royal Society of Edinburgh to discuss the future of the funding of tertiary education in Scotland.
As part of a session on what can be learned from elsewhere in the UK, we presented a birds-eye view and comparison of higher education fees and funding systems across the UK and how these compare to Scotland. There are substantial differences between how higher education is funded in Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and our presentation focused on a range of core metrics to compare the different systems. We also provided an analysis of what the impact would be of adopting the (entirety of the) English funding system in Scotland.
Our presentation slides are available here.
