Government announces new fusion investment, cites LE research

On 03 April 2025 the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced an initial £20 million investment in “Starmaker One”, a new fund aimed at mobilising up to £150 million in funding for fusion technology in the UK [Government kickstarts £100 million fusion investment – GOV.UK]. The government cites London Economics’ 2020 research [The Impact of UK Public Investments in UKAEA Fusion Research – December 2020 – London Economics] to support the decision, which found that the UK’s public investments in fusion research have generated between £3.7 million and £4.1 million of Gross Value Added for the UK economy and supported over 100 job years for every £1 million invested over the decade 2008/09-2018/19.
