The University of Birmingham has a long-standing history of cooperation with the Chinese city of Guangzhou, covering research, education, public health, and capacity building programmes. London Economics were commissioned to estimate the economic impact on the Chinese economy generated by the University of Birmingham’s collaborative activities in Guangzhou in these areas.

Our analysis of this impact focuses on the 2017-18 academic year. In addition to assessing the direct, indirect and induced impact associated with the University’s physical footprint in Guangzhou, we generate estimates of the economic benefits associated with the teaching and learning activity delivered to the 2017-18 cohort of students attending the University of Birmingham – Jinan University Joint Institute, offering joint dual Birmingham-Jinan Bachelor’s degree programmes in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Economics and Statistics, and Economics. The analysis also assesses the economic impact generated by the wide range of joint research activity undertaken as part of the collaboration.

Combining these impact strands, the aggregate impact on the Chinese economy associated with the University of Birmingham’s activities in Guangzhou in the 2017-18 academic year was estimated to be ¥327 million.
