We were commissioned by the University of York to analyse its economic, social and cultural impact across the United Kingdom, focusing on the University’s activities in the 2016-17.

The analysis focused on four major strands of economic impact. Specifically, in addition to the direct, indirect and induced impact associated with the University of York’s physical footprint (estimated at £702 million), we also generated estimates of the economic benefits associated with the University’s teaching and learning activity associated with the 2016-17 cohort of students (estimated at £488 million), the impact of the University’s research activities (£537 million), as well as the impact of educational exports generated by the University’s overseas students (£93 million). Combining these impact stands, we estimated that the total impact of the University of York’s activities in 2016-17 on the UK economy stood at approximately £1,820 million.

On top of these purely economic impacts, the University’s activities generate a multitude of societal impacts at home and abroad. These were addressed through a survey of the University’s alumni, with additional case studies showcasing the University of York’s real-world impact.
