Dano has more than 6 years’ experience analysing public policies; conducting evaluations; undertaking economic impact assessments; performing sophisticated econometric analysis; designing and conducting primary research (i.e., via surveys and interviews); and managing large-scale projects.

As part of the Competition team at LE Europe, Dano has extensive experience analysing competition policies and regulations. He has worked on various projects for the European Commission providing bespoke pieces of analysis and applying a range of methodological techniques. For example:

  • Dano played a key role in a study for DG COMP evaluating the Vertical Block Exemption Regulation (VBER). As part of the project, he conducted a thorough literature review, analysed antitrust laws and estimated the effect of different vertical agreements on competition and consumer welfare using an econometric analysis based on a large-scale hotel price dataset.
  • He has also worked on a market study on the distribution of hotel accommodation in the EU for DG COMP, for which he provided an overview of the market stakeholders and analysed the relationship between online platforms, hotels and intermediaries.
  • As part of a study for DG GROW on the implementation of the Concessions Directive (Directive 2014/23/EU), Dano analysed the Directive, national legislation and its impact on the use of concessions in the EU Member States. He analysed the TED database by applying natural language processing techniques and providing descriptive statistics.
  • Dano estimated the impact of Territorial Supply Chains (TSCs) in the EU retail sector on wholesale prices, retail prices and consumer spending for DG GROW. He analysed the prevalence of TSCs, the role of stakeholders and the impact of digitalisation on the EU retail market.
  • As part of an ex-post study evaluating Hercule III, an anti-fraud programme run by EC OLAF, Dano analysed the effectiveness of the programme by estimating its economic benefits and developed recommendations to improve the programme based on information from stakeholder interviews.
  • He built a simulation model to estimate the impact of R&D support programmes on innovation and economic output as part of the European SME Innovation Associate – Pilot for EC EASME.
  • Dano conducted an evaluation of the customs cooperation and mutual administrative assistance (CCMAA) between the EU and China for DG TAXUD estimating the effect of the agreement on trade volumes and analysing regulatory costs for EU businesses, national authorities and the EU.

Dano also recently managed a process and impact evaluation of the Trade Credit Reinsurance (TCR) scheme for BEIS. As part of the evaluation, he designed and analysed a 20-minute CATI survey with 600 businesses, as well as a number of in-depth interviews with different stakeholders. The study also involved conducting a Value-for-Money analysis including a model-based economic impact assessment. Dano has also managed an evaluation of tax-advantaged employee share schemes for HMRC, investigating the use of share schemes by companies and the impact they have on business and employment outcomes. In addition to conducting a CATI survey and semi-structured stakeholder interviews, he designed a bespoke econometric methodology to analyse the economic impact of share schemes based on HMRC’s monitoring data, secondary business data and survey responses to the Wealth and Assets Survey (WAS).

Dano holds an M.Phil. in Economic Research from the University of Cambridge as well as two degrees in Economics and in Business Administration from the University of St. Gallen. Prior to London Economics, Dano has worked for other consultancies and an economic research institute, conducting econometric analyses of public policies.
